1.

First at the ‘Empty Bottle’ pub down by the sea. Walk up from the water through some thistles and pick up a path to the street. Follow the street until it reaches Athelstan’s meadow where you continue to a blackthorn tree where three paths meet. The third path leads to Bath, and if you want to visit Bath, follow that path, but otherwise, take the other one which leads forth through heathland to the river which you follow north to its mouth. Go forward past the appletrees until you return back to the ‘Empty Bottle’. Don’t even think about eating their herring broth.

2.

First at the ‘Thirsty Viking’. Turn left out of the pub and after fifty yards cross a stile into a field of green grass. Cross the field onto a way leading down the hill (it can be slippy). After a further sixty yards, you will come to goat ford. Cross goat ford (only if conditions are good if you want your feet to stay dry - the stream can become deep quite quickly on a rainy day). Go through the grey groves and from the grey groves go to long down and along long down into withy grove. At withy grove take the road past Godwig’s house back to the ‘Thirsty Viking’ (good ale).

3.

First at the ‘King’s Head’ (good fish and chips). From the ‘King’s Head’ out through the chester (city) wall to the chalk pits, thence into the old ditch. Along the ditch round the back of the clay pit to the cliff near cow croft and thence to the lych-gate of the church and so back to Winchester city centre.

Note: a 'cipp' in Old English is in fact a rod or stick
